The exciting area of Flower Design is the focus of this challenging and engaging course of study. The structure of the course will take you on a journey that will let your creativity and imagination take flight. A series of practical learning sessions based on realistic down-to-earth methods will equip you with the confidence and ability to create designs that sit comfortably at the high-end of cutting edge Flower Design.
Mastering the Principles of Flower Design & Learning the Industry - Students will be introduced to the principles of Flower Design, starting with the basics of wiring, hand-tied bouquets, structural concepts, working with containers, and working within a range of stylistic themes. Line, form, structure, and aesthetic balance of colour and texture will be integrated into everything we do from the very beginning. On an industry level you will encounter every aspect of the commercial flower business: Selecting, buying at the wholesale market, costing, time management and the all-important areas of promoting, and presenting yourself and your ideas.
Design Practices & Portfolio Development – At the Academy students follow an integrated studio approach to Design Theory, Idea Creation and Sketchbook Work, in tandem with developing their practical work with flowers and plant material. The fresh ideas every student brings from their own experience are what enhance the collaborative creative process, an approach that encourages you to develop a strong individual style and build a unique portfolio of work throughout the course.
Practical Projects & Professional Practice – Students learn the design and planning skills required to carry out the full spectrum of effects used in Flower Design, and build an appreciation for the creative potential of a wide range of flower and plant materials, season-by-season. Students also develop a range of creative interpretations for weddings, events, and corporate installations.
Bringing together the skills, knowledge and understanding from the specialist techniques you have studied, with the confidence of having found your own personal style, this will enable you to work to specific design briefs, and deliver a project to a professional standard.
Work Experience Opportunities - As the course progresses, there will be the opportunity to supplement your studies with work experience in other areas of The Academy of Flowers design business. This will complement your studio work, and allow you to gain a greater appreciation of the practical applications of Flower Design, while building your portfolio.
